| CHRISTLETON CHESTERMANIA POP CONCERT - 2001 | |
|
The news that a pop concert was planned to take place in Plough Lane Christleton on Sunday 23rd September, 2001 from 11.00am to 10.30pm brought cries of disbelief and anger from local residents. They wondered why they had not been consulted earlier. The organisers Frontline Events of London assured residents that there was nothing to worry about.
The pop concert was expected to attract some 25,000 visitors and up to 10,000 cars with an entrace fee of £28.50. The venue was to be on fields that Mr. Ed Walley had agreed to rent out. Other entertainments planned included a fun fair, cinema zone and a fashion catwalk. A meeting was called at Christleton High School on 23rd July when some 200 residents attended. The majority of the people present rasied obections their fears being about traffic chaos, security risk, drink and drugs problems, litter and a nightime disturbance. A small group of younger people at the back of the hall spoke out in favour. A group of Christleton residents from Plough Lane and surrounding areas carried on meeting to co-ordinate opposition to the Chestermania Pop Concert and then on Tuesday 7th August it was announced that Frontline had withdrawn the application although they had already spent many thousands of pounds in the planning. Whatever the reasons for the withdrawal of the application, there are good reasons to believe that the organisers will try again next year to hold a similar event. Residents of Christleton hope they will be notified and consulted at an early stage if any proposals are submitted for such an event. This web site carried a poll at the time in which 49 people voted. The question asked was "Is Christleton a good venue for a Pop Concert?" 13 people said YES, 35 people said NO and 1 was undecided. The comments given included If it is not suitable for the Roodee, what chance for Plough Lane Your webmaster sat on the fence this time. Perhaps he just wanted to cover a good news story. |
