Bodnant Garden, Tal-y-Cafn, Colwyn Bay, LL28 5RE. Telephone 01492 650460. Open from mid March to October. 10.00am to 5.00pm.
This spectacular garden owned by The National Trust is just under an hour away by car from Christleton. The gardens were begun in 1875 by the industrial chemist Henry Davies Pochin who discovered how to turn soap white. The upper gardens are formal with lawns and borders but the real delight is when you start to descend into the dell with its myriad of rhododendrums and magnolias. When you reach the base of the valley you will discover a still pool, water rushing over rocks and a waterfall. The garden extends to about 90 acres and is looked after by 18 gardeners.
This garden is perhaps best know for its laburnum arch but do not rely on seeing it when you see all the laburnum out in Pepper Street and around the village. The Bodnant laburnum is pruned so that it does not flower until a bit later around early June.
