I hope followers of the website continue to enjoy some of the images of the Primary School that I am now putting on the website. The “new” school will have its 50th Anniversary on April 24th 2024, and all my images are taken well before the data protection act. Unless I know otherwise, individual children are not identified. I do feel however that it would be a great loss to the Village that the events of 50 years ago and for subsequent years until today are not recorded in photographic evidence. All the images would have been shown to Parents at the end of Year 6 Leavers Ceremonies and were a great reminder of the child’s life throughout their primary school career.
This collection is a random sample from the photographic archive, and includes lots of images taken in the Infant Department, or on special visits. One of our favourite places to visit was St James’ Church, and several of the images show the children at work on art & design projects, working with the late Dorothy Colley. Some of their work can still be seen in the church, in the lady chapel and on the south aisle. The school also held services at Harvest, Christmas and Easter, as well as performing plays and supporting Christingle and other musical events there.
One of the favourite occasions was at the opening of the new road across the village, when the children were allowed to sit in the road, before the ribbon was cut, by the Government Transport Minister of the day I think. Trees planted to commemorate the occasion are to be seen directly opposite to The Trooper, on the west side of Trooper Bridge. Also included this month are visits to the Power Station and Electric Mountain at Llanberris, Beeston Cattle Market & Beeston Iron Lock. Children seen at The Roman Army Museum, and on many visits to Chester, especially to St Mary’s Centre, working with the then director, Mrs Greta Fox, an old friend and colleague of both Christleton schools.
I’ve also included some of the Sports Teams pictures, who were always successful in particular in Chester District Swimming Gala’s, Cricket and Athletics Competitions, and we were so fortunate to have the full support of the High School staff, led by Headteacher Les George and Head of Sport Tony Dromgoole. Through them the Primary School were given incredible access to the swimming pool, 9.00- to 9.30am every day of the school year, and also use of the running track and athletics facilities before the “new” school ground was ready. We were also given special access to the new Sports Centre facilities, to organise badminton tournaments. The Cricket Club led by the wonderful Jim Partington cut a square for the children between the main cricket square and the Pavilion, and provided safe conditions, for the children to learn their cricketing skills.
I’ve also found a couple of pictures of the maypole team, being transported across to the meadows in the City Ferry Boat which operates in summer from Sandy Lane. They were on their way to perform the maypole to the spectators attending one of the many Civil War re-enactments the school were involved with. More of these activities in the months to come.
