Many of you will know of my recent interest in the Roman Legion, especially of the XXVV, following the discovery of the Legion’s main symbol, a life sized, wild boar carved in stone in a garden in Christleton. Since then, I have been looking closer at Roman activity all over Britain, even finding another wild boar recently, carved on a tombstone in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. In the past two years there have been lots of displays and exhibitions showing treasures that have been unearthed in our part of the country especially from Roman and Viking periods, so I thought it time to reproduce this list of Roman material found in our area. It was put together by members of the CLHG for the Christleton 2000 years of History book, and our earlier publication Christleton; The Story of a Cheshire Village 1979. The Gros. Mus. in the text refers to the fact that the artefact is kept/or known about at the Grosvenor Museum.

The sites and Monuments Record for Cheshire holds a list of the following finds from Christleton and its vicinity.
1. A bronze coin of Constantine I as Augustus (BEATA TRANQUILLITAS) type found in a garden in Hawthorn Road in 1958. Gros. Mus.
2. A lead weight found in 1958 in a garden on Rowton Bridge Road. Marked with digits two unciae(Roman Ounces) Gros. Mus.
3. A barbarous radiate bronze coin of 3rd C. Reported to Gros. Mus. in 1992, together with a hoard of medieval silver found in Rake Lane.
4. A damaged fragment of the upper section of a dolphin type brooch, found in Skips Lane in 1988. Gros. Mus.
5. In 1878, the footing of a red gloss (Samian ware) cup in a trench at Christleton Hall. Stamped with the potters name Secundus inside the base. Presumed to be from Holt. Man. Mus.
6. A coin of Geta (CAD 208) of unknown provenance. Drawn by John Speed Mapmaker in 1610. Mentioned by Ormerod in his History of Cheshire 1882. It is supposed to have been inscribed COL.DEVANA.LEGXX VITRIX which means it could be linked to the 20th Legion. Linked to a further coin find of Constantine found in Christleton.
7. A silver coin, a denarious of Lucius Verus of AD 163-4, bearing the figure of Mars on the reverse. Found on Rowton Moor in 19th C, with other unspecified coins. Gros. Mus.
8. An illegible coin from Rowton Moor also in Gros. Mus
9. A bronze coin, an orichalum dupondius of Vespasia, with the Goddess Fortuna on the reverse. Minted in Lyons AD 77-68. Found in a garden at Fir Tree Lane, Littleton in 1979.
10. A bronze knobbed terret ring; a horse trapping with three clusters of knobs evenly spaced on upper section; Found on the banks of the River Gowy 2nd C Gros. Mus.
11. A bronze bell, 8cm high, 12.2cm in diameter with linear decoration. Found just south of Stamford Bridge on the Gowy in 1957. Gros. Mus.
12. A bronze coin, a heavily worn as of Trajan, bearing the figure of Salus, the Goddess of Safety on the reverse. Minted in Rome AD 103-111. Found in a field near The Abotts Well in 1989.
13. A lead weight of eight unicae found at Vicars Cross in 1885 on the line of the Roman Road running east from Chester. Gros. Mus.
14. A sherd from an amphora, possibly Dressel type 20, stamped SALS, found at Watling Court in Vicars Cross. Gros. Mus.
15. A fragment of a bronze trumpet-brooch, found 1978 south of Waverton.
16. A lead weight of four unciae found by the canal south of Waverton 1977.

Two other local finds of interest are recorded; a gold coin of Galba, Emperor in AD 68-69 was found at Huxley, and a coin of Constantine II, a lead weight and a bronze figurine were found at Saighton. 1978-79
