The migration of people across regions and countries has happened from time immemorial, and I’ve always been fascinated to see the number of family names with Welsh origin represented in the village population lists. One of the first things I did when I started to explore the history of the village, was to purchase a full photocopy of the 1841 Village Census from the National Registry Office which records so many different aspects of life in Christleton at that time. I still look at it from time to time as it contains many fascinating stories. A few weeks ago I took it out, and looked again at the birth places of people living in the Parish in 1841. I’ll be following it up next month with an examination of the occupations and trades of a village that, in 1841, was almost fully able to look after all the people’s needs.
